کاغذ کا گھوڑا عکسی مفتی کے بیوروکریٹک تحربات پر مشتمل یادداشتیں ہیں جو پاکستانی افسر شاہی کی ذہنیت اور کام کرنے میں رکاوٹیں ڈالنے کی تراکیب پر ایک دلچسپ کتاب ہے۔ اسے بیوروکریٹک لطیفے کہنا زیادہ بہتر ہوگا ۔

"اچھا تو مفتی صاحب آپ لوک گیتوں پر کام کریں گے، دیکھنے میں تو آپ معقول انسان نظر آتے ہیں۔ پڑھے لکھے بھی ہیں۔"

1970 میں لال قلعہ انڈیا میں نصب لائٹ اینڈ ساونڈ شو کی کامیابی دیکھتے ہوئے لال قلعہ میں بھی لال قلعہ جیسا شو شروع کیا گیا جو کچھ عرصہ چل کر بند ہوگیا۔ جبکہ یہ لال قلعہ والے شو سے کہیں بہتر تھا۔

Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela

Its a biography of one of my most favorite personalities "Nelson Mandela" that brings the reader into the huts of poor Africans and make him feel the hardships these people suffered from. The reader faces the sanctions imposed by white minority on black majority, it makes him fight with the blacks against the whites, it takes the reader inside the prison with the great Mandela, liberate him of white opperssion alongside the blacks and wins freedom and equality for him as a participant of the African Freedom Movement. That's it !!!!!!!!!!!!

The Old Man and The Sea: Earnest Hemingway

The story of commitment and courage of an old man who sails into sea and catches a very big fish. Although other fishes ate every bit of flesh from his catch but he manages to bring skeleton of that big fish to the shores.

Moral of the story: trying for your goal and struggling for it is what means most for a man.

"Pygmalion" by George Bernard Shaw.

This book is about a street girl selling flowers and wants to become a sales girl in any flower shop. She meets with 2 gentlemen who train and transform this girl into a Lady. An interesting account of a woman's feeling after this transformation.

"Tracking Marco Polo" by Tim Severin

This book is travelogue/ research paper of Tim Severin and his 02 fellows on the tracks that Marco Polo covered in his world travel. They went to all those places that were visited by Marco Polo and Marco Polo mentioned these places in his travel accounts. They traced all those places as well as articles that have been recorded by Marco Polo. Unfortunately they could not visit China. However, the account is quite interesting and informative regarding Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan. I personally like the segment that describes the Fake Paradise established by Hassan Bin Sabbah who first time used suicide bombers to assassinate head of the states.

The Bastard of Istambul: Elif Shafak

The only rational paragraph:

"the truth is ..... some among the Armenians in the diaspora would never want the Turks to recognize the genocide. If they do so, they will pull the rug out from under our feet and take the strongest bond that unite us. Just as the Turks have been in the habit of denying their wrongdoing, the Armenians have been in the habit of savoring the cocoon of victimhood. Apparently, there are some old habits that need to be changed on both sides."

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

My opinion about the author is that he is too inspired from Eastern and Arab part of the world, especially the literature. His book's names and characters reflect this inspiration: Aleph, Maktub, Alchemist, (the female in the novel is Fatima). The story of Alchemist might be inspired of copied from one of the Arab tales. I have read it earlier , do not remember when and where but when I read this novel I realized that this is not something new, however the treatment to the story has been changed but the central idea is the same.

Although one more repetition of the same nostalgia as in چاند چہرے but still marvelous. After Mustansar Hussain Tarar, A. Hamid is the one who can make you fall in love with all those people n places he has met or been there. I bet..!

بچپن میں پتہ نہیں کہاں سے عنبر، ناگ ماریہ سیریز کے دو ناول ہاتھ آگئے تھے ، بہت ہی پسند آئے تھے، اب پڑھنے سے ڈرتی ہوں کہ کہیں وہ مزا دوبارہ نہ آیا تو . .

If Rumi n Shams Tabrezi were in present age, they would have been blamed of being Homosexuals, and Shams Tabrezi would have been punished for Child Marriage as well as for Child Sexual Abuse as per this novel's info ;)

Out of Africa by Keran Blixen

"The Grass was me,

The Air ...

The distant invisible Mountains were me,

The tired Oxen were me,

I breathed with the slight night wind through the thorn-tree."

is an autobiographical account of a lady who spent more than a decade on a farmland in Kenyia and actively participated in farm life as well as country life. Her description of African landscape is fabulous. she makes you feel that you are living in that landscape at the very moment. She describes wild instincts of Natives, traditions, values, customs of Muhammadan Somalis, behaviors and misconceptious biases of settlers interestingly. 

She has keen interest in wild life, landscapes and weather of Africa. Her accounts include the legal cases among Natives n Somali wherein she served as judge, of her Native Squatters whom she was a keeper, a doctor and a teacher at the same time, of Game safaris far inlands of Kenya, of lion hunting, of happenings on coffee farms, of long rains, of short rains, of no rains are of great interest as well as of learning. She made a good comparison of difference of opinion among Settlers, Natives and Somalis based on their biases, instincts and religion respectively.

WARNING:

DO NOT watch the movie based on this book. They have destroyed the adventure element of the story and have turned it into a cheap love story filled with sex.

چاند چہرے، مختلف شخصیات کے بارے میں اے ۔ حمید کے لکھے ہوئے نثری خاکوں پر مشتمل ہے۔ اے ۔ حمید نے بہت ہی محبت کے ساتھ احمد ندیم قاسمی کا خاکہ لکھا ہے، اسے پڑھ کر آپ کو ایسا محسوس ہوتا ہے جیسے آپ کسی پرفضا اور پرسکون مقام پر صبا کے جھونکے اپنے چہرے پر محسوس کر رہے ہوں، دور دور تک کوئی نہ ہو۔

منٹو صاحب کا خاکہ آپ کو ایک دم اداس کر دیتا ہے، فیض احمد فیض کا خاکہ اس قدر خاموشی سے گذر جاتا ہے کہ آپ بھی خاموش ہو جاتے ہیں ۔ ۔ ۔ کتاب کی ابتدا میں تو آپ جیلس سے ہوجاتے ہیں کہ جن محفلوں اور دوستیوں کا ذکر اے حمید نے کیا ہے، آپ ان میں شامل کیوں نہیں لیکن جیسے جیسے آپ کتاب کے آخر کی جانب بڑھتے ہیں۔ آپ خود بخود ان محفلوں اور دوستیوں کا حصہ بنتے جاتے ہیں۔

اے حمید چائے کے رسیا بلکہ عاشق تھے۔ وہ چائے کا تذکرہ ایسے کرتے ہیں جیسے کوئی محبوب کا تذکرہ کرتا ہے۔ مولانا ابوالکلام آزاد کے بعد وہ ہیں جو چائے کو محبوبہ کے درجے پر فائز کردینے کا ہنر رکھتے ہیں۔

بقیہ دو کتابوں میں ان ہی باتوں کو دہرایا گیا ہے جو چاند چہرے میں درج ہیں۔

یادوں کی بارات از جوش ملیح آبادی

بہت ساری کتب میں نے اس لیے پڑھی ہیں کہ ان کا شہرہ بہت ہے۔ یہ بھی ایک ایسی ہی کتاب ہے۔ جوش صاحب نے کم از کم اپنے بارے میں تو ایمان داری کے ساتھ لکھا ہوگا، اور یہ بہت بہادری کا کام ہے کہ بندہ اپنے اچھے اور برے اعمال اور گناہ بھی بلا کم و کاست بیان کردے۔ قصہ مختصر انہیں مردوں کا کشور ناہید کہا جاسکتا ہے۔ 

تھوڑا سا نرگسیت کا تاثر ملتا ہے ۔ لیکن صبح کی منظر کشی کے لیے بہت ہی خو بصورت طرز تحریر ہے ۔

Thanks to Raffay Imtiaz, I got to know the wonderful world of Vampires. Loved it. I wish I could make a movie on this book. The obvious choice for the main lead would be none other than Johnny Depp ;)

حسرتیں کہ وہ ہوتی تو ایک ایسا دوست میسر ہوتا جس کے سامنے دل کے داغ رکھے جاسکتے. خوف کہ وہ بھی اس دنیا اور بیٹوں جیسی ہوتی تو کیاہوتا ۔
